1 Windmill Drive - the permanent proposal

Windmill Drive was closed off to vehicular traffic in August 2020 on a trial basis as part of the borough's COVID-19 response to make the area safer for walking and cycling. Previously the road had steady flows of motor traffic which conflicted with the local walking and cycling routes. In addition, the narrow road, made tighter by the parking bays, ensured motorists regularly came into conflict with people walking or cycling, as well as with other motorists.

Lambeth Council has been developing a proposal for a new permanent space where the temporary scheme is currently located. In May 2021 we teamed up with Phil Jones Associates (PJA) a transport design consultancy and Street Space to conduct local engagement to gather people's views and to feed into an ambitious vision for the space. PJA went through a design process to create a design that responds to the strategic goals of the council and the feedback from the engagement.

The design aims to compliment the wild nature of the common, whilst providing a space which is safe for people to walk and cycle. The semi-circular rain gardens provide sustainable drainage and greenery, whilst the road surface, allows water to travel through and into the soil, both of these things help prevent flooding. The position of the rain gardens and planters aims to slow cyclists and create a shared space for all, seating is provided to allow people to enjoy and use the space in a way they couldn't before, spaces for nature to flourish have been included helping the areas biodiversity and Logs and posts giving children a natural space to play.

We would like to hear your thoughts on the permanent proposal so we can make any amendments that are required. We will then feedback your comments as well as the community engagement already carried out to our cabinet members to make a decision on. This part of the engagement will run from October 18th to November 19th.
